Why?

I worked with an individual who was on the cusp of being a Millennial.  He was not a Millennial, but he was so close to being born in 1980 that he had many characteristics of both Gen Xers and Millennials.  One of the things he did to our employers frustration was to ask the question why every time the employer gave us an assignment.  As I have continued to grow and to learn more about Millennials I have begun to understand the importance of knowing the why.

I will even go so far as to say God designed us to desire to know and understand why.  I have a four year old daughter and she asks me literally dozens of times a day why.  Her question drives me crazy.  The answer is because I said so, period.  But the why question is inherently built into our DNA by our Creator, and as such, I ought to not be annoyed with answering her fiftieth why question because she is doing what God created her to do and be.

So, why is why so important?  The answer to this question is: because it answers the question of motive or intent.  I was listening to a Dave Ramsey Entreleadership podcast the other day and they used the example of Tevo.  When Tevo was released they told their potential customers what Tevo was and did, but did not tell them why they needed the product.  As a result, people did not flood the stores to purchase one of the best digital video recording devices on the market.  Rather if they had answered the why question, I believe they would have sold out rapidly.

As a way of illustration Tevo ought to have told their potential customers why they needed TevoTevo would have allowed these families to build life around their schedule without annoying commercials.  They could watch their favorite shows when they wanted to and if they needed to stop watching, they could return and resume where they left off.  They could have built their campaign around their ability to help a family be a better family and still enjoy their television entertainment.

I would encourage you to think about your why  Why do you do the things you do?  Why do you not do things you don’t do?  Why are you motivated to participate in some activities, but not other activities?  These kind of questions must also be applied to the church.  Why do we at FBC Bowling Green feel called us to being a church which is Christ centered, gospel driven, joyfully united and prayerfully obedient?  If we are able to answer this question, then we are able to have the motivation to move forward and to reach people for Jesus.

Let us each determine the why in our lives and then let us live completely unhindered in order to accomplish this mission before us.  Let our lives bring glory to God.  If you are willing, please share with us your why and let us grow as a result of your contribution.
