Scripture: Judges
6:13-14
Then
Gideon said to him, "O my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all
this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about,
saying, 'Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' But now the LORD has
abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian." The LORD
looked at him and said, "Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from
the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?"
Insights: After the
Lord calls Gideon a valiant warrior, he responds back with a series of
questions which reveal his true doubt and disbelief in the Lord God and His
power. I believe this attitude of
questioning the Lord God is one of the major downfalls of the church in America
today. We are constantly questioning the
commands of the Lord and those questions often times lead us down a pity party
path. I want you to notice the answers
the Lord gives Gideon to his questions.
Look at verse fourteen and read the Lord’s response again. Did you catch the Lord’s answer to the
questions? No you did not, because the
Lord does not even address the issues with Gideon. You will recall this technique was the same
one the Lord used on Job in his time of questioning God. Rather, what the Lord did say to Gideon was,
in Scott’s translation, “Get up and go fight the Midianites, I am with You and
You will win!” Keep in mind the scene
for a moment. Gideon is hiding and does
not think he is this valiant warrior and yet the Lord tells him to go in his
strength. Is the Lord really telling
Gideon that he is personally strong enough to defeat Midian? The answer is no. Notice the question the Lord gives to
Gideon. He asks him, “Have I not sent
you?” In other words, the strength that
Gideon possesses is not his own strength, but rather the presence of the Lord
is His strength. If you are born again,
then you are of the Beloved of the Lord and He is always with you. You have the same kind of strength and power
as Gideon. Focus on the assignment the
Lord has given to you and you will not have time enough to ask questions which
are truly irrelevant at the end of the day.
Questions:
- Is
your life plagued by questions?
- What
assignment has the Lord given to you?
Prayer: Father, so
often I question what You are doing and why You are doing things the way You
are doing them. Help me to be so focused
on what You have commanded me to do that I do not have time to get sidetracked
with peripheral and unimportant issues. Amen.
