The Motivation for Both the World and the Believer

Scripture: Matthew 6:21-23
for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 "The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. 23 "But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

Insights: We have looked at the worlds answer to money.  We have looked at the believers answer to money.  Today, we shift and look at the motivation behind our choice.  The motivation is our heart.  Jesus then gives an illustration as to the nature of the heart.  You can in some ways interchange the words heart and eye in these three verses.  The point really falls to allegiance.  In other words, if they eye or heart chooses to pursue the world and self, then the vision is full of darkness and the treasure is going to be temporal and self-serving.  If the eye or heart chooses to pursue Christ, then the vision is full of light and the treasure is going to be eternal and God glorifying.  One of the areas in which we delude ourselves is in our finances.  We live as if the money is ours and we can pursue our pleasures and at the same time have a vibrant love relationship with God.  Jesus is clearly teaching that a concept of that nature is impossible.  The reason is because the heart and eye are intrinsically connected to one’s treasure.  Tomorrow we are going to see this point more clearly portrayed as we look at verse twenty-four, but Jesus is already pointing to the conclusion here.  Everything we do points and declare our hearts allegiance.

Questions:
  1. What is your motivation as it relates to money?
  2. Are you deceiving yourself as to where you heart really has formed its allegiance?
Prayer: Lord, make my vision clear.  I want to see my life as it truly is.  Reveal to me the true condition of my heart and give me the courage to choose You.  Amen.
